Affinity Hospice Volunteers
What makes a good volunteer?
The beginning characteristic of a volunteer
is an interest and willingness to become involved in a community greater
than themselves. There is a desire to assist and contribute to society and
enhance the lives of others. Someone willing to commit to contributing a
fraction of personal time to a mission that is greater than the sum of self.
Hospice volunteers have an interest in improving the quality of life for hospice
patients and families, for as long as life lasts. Sometimes this is accomplished
through administrative assistance, special project assistance, or direct patient
contact.
Compassion and a willingness to commit to the purpose and mission of hospice
are key elements in volunteering.
"Become a Volunteer and experience the difference one life can make in the lives of others."
Can I really make a difference? Absolutely! Each person plays a significant
role in delivering the full spectrum of care needed for these patients and
families. Administrative volunteers free staff to complete much needed work.
Patient support volunteers directly and indirectly assist these families in
daily life circumstances.
These families are facing life-ending challenges and adjustments but the family
must continue in everyday functions of life. The grass continues to grow, leaves
continue to fall, dishes must be washed and dinner must be bought.
Facing these challenges alone plus dealing with the loss of a loved one can
be overwhelming.
Volunteers bring additional resources and energy to each situation. Volunteers
bring additional support and caring to those who are hurting as well as to
those who serve them.
So you tell me, can you make a difference? I say yes, without a doubt.
